I am a seven-year stage IIIc ovarian cancer survivor. My gyn initially misdiagnosed me with severe endometriosis and recommended a hysterectomy. The doctors told me, “Don’t worry–it’s a 99% chance that it’s endometriosis, it’s not likely to be cancer.” When I woke up from surgery it was quite a shock to realize that I had ovarian cancer.
It was a really rough time in my life. I had support from family and friends, but I didn’t know anybody who had gone through what I was going through. I just felt really alone.
That’s how I found the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance. It’s been such a great, great support to me. The community online has been a big help. You can reach out to other survivors. They have questions about what they’re going through; I can help them because I’ve been through it. Now I call them my sisters. Knowing that the support group is there, that the Alliance is able to provide this–I don’t feel alone in this as I did.
This summer, I was blessed to be able to attend the Alliance’s Annual Conference thanks to a scholarship funded by donors. It made a world of difference to me. I had never met another ovarian cancer survivor. Now I can’t say that anymore. I met so many wonderful, wonderful girls who’ve gone through what I did.
I hope you will consider a donation to the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance so they can continue supporting survivors with in-person and online resources. Your support can make a tremendous difference for a woman like me.
P.S. I don’t know where I would be right now if it wasn’t for the Alliance. It’s changed my whole outlook on life, and I’m sure it’s changed other survivors’ lives. Thank you for supporting survivors. Your gift will make a tremendous difference.
