DoD Ovarian Cancer Research Program Consumer Review
Annie Ellis, Representing Ovarian Cancer National Alliance
As an ovarian cancer advocate, I recently had the opportunity to serve as a consumer reviewer to evaluate research applications submitted to the Ovarian Cancer Research Program (OCRP) sponsored by the Department of Defense. I was nominated to participate in the program by The Ovarian Cancer National Alliance. As a consumer reviewer, I was a full voting member, along with prominent scientists, at meetings to help determine how the $16 million appropriated by Congress for Fiscal Year 2012 (FY12) will be spent on future ovarian cancer research.
Consumer reviewers represent the collective view of ovarian cancer survivors and patients, family members, and persons at risk for the disease as they evaluate the impact of each application. As a consumer reviewer, I was filled with hope by the level of dedication and determination of the scientist reviewers and all the efforts being made to find better treatments.
