Late last year, TRICARE – the health program for Uniformed Service members – released regulations to comply with existing federal guidelines. These regulations stated that TRICARE could not cover devices that are not FDA approved. Many laboratory tests and genetic tests are considered devices, however they are not all approved by the FDA. These tests, the regulations read, could not then be covered by TRICARE. However, the regulations did create a demonstration project to help gather data on some of these tests, including the safety and effectiveness of these devices.
Based on responses received through the notice and comment process, TRICARE added both the BRCA test and the Oncotype Dx test to this demonstration project.
