Most women with BRCA mutations elect to have surgery
A new study in the journal Cancer showed that more than 80 percent of women who tested positive for a mutation in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations chose to have their ovaries, breasts or both removed. These genetic mutations cause an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Women who test positive for mutations in either gene are urged to have prophylactic surgery, which should also include removal of the fallopian tube.
