Ovarian cancer survivor Susan Leighton testified today before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, speaking on behalf of the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance. In her statement, Susan talked about the benefits of the Department of Defense Ovarian Cancer Research Program (DoD OCRP). She asked the Senate to provide flat funding for this program in fiscal year 2012, in the amount of $20 million.
Susan has served as a consumer reviewer for the DoD OCRP for two years, giving her a deep understanding of the advances that are made thanks to OCRP funding. She notes: “We are on the precipice of understanding how ovarian cancer develops, grows and spreads–and ultimately eliminating it.”
Representatives from the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists, the National Breast Cancer Coalition and the National Military Family Association also spoke during today’s hearing.
