Cost studies presented at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Clinical Oncology discussed the rising cost of cancer treatment. In 2010, the cost of cancer care was $124 billion nationally. Even those with insurance struggle to pay for care. Patients who were responsible for higher co-pays stopped taking their drugs more often than those who were responsible for lower co-pays; oral anti-cancer drugs are not reimbursed in the same manner as intravenous anti-cancer drugs and usually have a higher patient cost. The average out of pocket cost for people in one study was just above $700 per month.
