On July 13th, more than 110 advocates clad in teal from across the nation congregated on Capitol Hill to ask their elected officials to support ovarian cancer-related legislation and funding requests.
Before advocates went to visit the offices of their elected officials, Representative Donna Edwards of Maryland spoke at the Advocacy Day breakfast held in the Rayburn House office building. She was joined by other speakers from the offices of Congresswoman DeLauro (Connecticut) and Congressman Sandy Levin (Michigan). Mayra Alvarez, Director of Public Health Policy for the Office of Health Reform in the Department of Health and Human Services, also spoke about the nation’s progress in allowing more women with cancer to receive the insurance they need.
After the breakfast, advocates went off to meet with the staffs of their Representatives and Senators. More than 160 House and Senate offices were visited by Advocacy Day participants. Super advocate, Dianne Blankenstein, from Texas visited every Texas representative (32 different offices) and both Texas Senators!
