The Ovarian Cancer National Alliance would like to recognize one of our new partner members in New York, Hope for Heather, on the outstanding work they have done to educate women and spread awareness about ovarian cancer. Our partner member organizations are a much needed asset for the fight against ovarian cancer, and we would like to thank Hope for Heather for all of their accomplishments during their first year.
Hope for Heather was created in memory of Heather Weeks, who lost her battle with cancer at age 24. Hope for Heather was founded to carry on her dream of educating women of the symptoms of ovarian cancer.
In 2009, the organization planned four events that raised funds for research and awareness for the cause. In July, Hope for Heather held an American Idol style karaoke contest called Karaoke for a Cause. Approximately $2,500 was raised and donated to Sloan-Kettering for cancer research.
In August, the first ever Hope for Heather booth at the New York State (NYS) Fair passed out ovarian cancer literature over the course of 12 days. Over one million people attended the NYS Fair, with six thousand being reached by the Hope for Heather campaign.
Heather’s Teal Ribbon Walk in September spread awareness to the Liverpool, NY community. Over 400 supporters attended in the pouring rain to march for the fight against ovarian cancer.
Additionally, Hope for Heather held Heather’s Girl’s Day Out in November. The event was held at a dance studio in Liverpool, NY where Heather grew up. The fun-filled day of pampering and “retail therapy” included massages, manicures, pedicures and the opportunity to shop for items such as jewelry, chocolates and designer bags; not to mention an opportunity for the women in the community to be educated about the symptoms of ovarian cancer.
Congratulations on a successful first year, Hope for Heather! Your efforts have helped spread awareness about ovarian cancer. We know you will continue to help the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance in its mission to advance the interests of women with ovarian cancer.
